Overview of the Postgraduate Study

History in Institute of European Civilization stretches from ancient times to the present. The Institute owns a prominent academic team contributing to their professional fields including Economic and Social history in Medieval and Early Modern Europe, History of Western Law,Global Modernization, International Relationships, Historical Theories, and Comparative Study of Civilizations. As a postgraduate student, you could choose any period or topic of History concerned to research.

Postgraduate students are trained under the tutorial system.You will beassigned to your own supervisor. The supervisor will guide you in everyday study and help you to achieve your aims for future academic careers. You are encouraged to participate in your supervisors’ research projects to gain experience and share ideas. Besides, there are a variety of opportunities for postgraduate students to expand academic horizon. You are encouraged to attend seminars, workshops, and conferences at home and abroad. The Institute also appoint a group of tutors to supervise your thesis proposals, mid-term assessment and dissertation writing. After the whole training and studying process, you are expected to acquire the expertise of World History, to master a foreign language applying in your research, to obtain the ability of using digital technologies to collect and handle kinds of primary sources and secondary studies.All these skills assure you becoming a better history researcher in the future.

Degree Program for PhD Study

As a PhD student, you could choose one of the five directions including Economic and Social History, Ancient and Medieval History, Modern History, Regional and National History, and Historiography Studies.As for graduation requirements, you need to obtain 20 credits, submit a 100,000-word thesis and pass the defense, all these should be accomplished in three, or at most six years from the date of admission.

We encourage every PhD student to attend various academic seminars and to publish articles in peer-reviewed journals, each activity can be counted as a corresponding credit.

Degree Program for MA Study

As a MA student, you could choose one of the five directions including Economic and Social History, Ancient and Medieval History, Modern History, Regional and National History, and Historiography Studies.As for graduation requirements, you need to obtain 32 credits, submit a 30,000-word thesis and pass the defense, all these should be accomplished in three, or at most five, years from the date of admission.
