Topic: Globalising Classics:Conversations with Graduate Students in Classics
Time: August 29, 2022 at 5am PDT / 8am EDT / 1pm BST / 2pm CET / 8pm CST (China)/ 9pm JST.
Zoom Meeting ID: 959 0220 4263
Passcode: 601940
In the hope to contribute toward the much-needed diversification of our field, this workshop provides a platform for students from non-traditional backgrounds interested in (Western) classical studies, especially at the graduate level, and to provide additional support to international scholars who wish to pursue a career in Classics. Organized primarily by Thu Truong, the workshop features seven current graduate students or recent PhDs, all of whom have rich experiences studying classics in Asia, America, and Europe, to share their own journeys and thoughts about classics, as well as practical experiences with applying for graduate programs. Questions they will discuss include but are not limited to the following:
· How should a student without a background in classical education/without a Classics BA prepare herself for a higher degree in Classics?
· What should one keep in mind when choosing among doctoral programs in the US, in the UK, or in continental Europe?
· How far in advance should one get prepared for a higher degree in Classics?
· Are there any pitfalls to avoid (both in the process of general preparation and during the application)?
English will be the main work language for the sessions. In order to make the workshop, especially the Q and A, as accessible as possible, the audience may use their preferred language(s) and translations will be provided (by the speakers, the chair, or volunteers) for these conversations. The workshop is intended to be an inclusive and friendly space.
