Introduction:
This volume primarily examines the development and characteristics of local autonomy systems, as well as their role in the evolution of European Civilization, throughout the political and social evolution from the Middle Ages to the modern and contemporary periods.
In different historical periods, the central-local relations of major European countries have exhibited respective contents and features, which are closely associated with factors such as historical traditions, Feudalism, nation-states, industrialization and democratization, and the formation of welfare states. On the basis oftheir characteristics, the central-local relations of major European countries also share certain commonalities, reflecting the general patterns of the development of European civilization.
The book is mainly elaborated in three stages: the first stage focuses on central-local relations in the feudal Period; the second stage focuses on central-local relations during the nation-state period; and the third stage focuses on central-local relations since the 19th century. It is particularly noteworthy that the governance practices of European countries encompass both successful experiences and practical lessons, all of which require to be understood objectively and comprehensively.
