More than 150 scholars attended the 9th Congress for Medieval History Association of China and the Academic Seminar of 2020. The academic topical report was chaired by Professor XU Jialing of Northeast Normal University. Professor CHEN Zhiqiang of Nankai University and Professor PENG Xiaoyu of Peking University gave speeches successively. Professor CHEN shared his theoretical reflection on the formation, characteristics and influence of the Byzantine Empire’s centralized system. Professor PENG focused on the dilemma of teaching materials and second foreign language studying in the undergraduate course of medieval history. In the afternoon, the participating experts and scholars were divided into 6 online groups, they conducted fully academic discussions and interactions on the four medieval historical themes including Epidemic Situation and Environment, Politics and Law, Economy and Society, Ideology and Culture.
The congress also elected leading members of the new council. Professor LIU Jinghua of Tianjin Normal University was elected as the chairman. And the vice-chairmen come from Peking University, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Northeast Normal University, Fudan University, Renmin University of China and Sun Yat-sen University respectively. Professor HOU Jianxin serves as the honorary chairman. In his concluding speech at the conference, Professor HOU has reviewed the development and progress of world history in China over the past decades, emphasizing the importance of medieval studies for understanding Western Civilization and history of the whole world. He has also encouraged new and old colleagues in the academic field to forge ahead.
In conclusion, Professor LIU Jinghua, the newly appointed chairman, delivered a speech. He said that he would live up to the trust of the old leaders of the association and all colleagues, and strive to do a good job in organization and service of the association, and further promote the study of medieval history and activities of academic communication in China. In a word, the conference was a complete success.
