According to the economy survey of the rural area in Baoding in the 1930s, this volume inducted a comprehensive study on the cycle of materials of production and living inpeasant families during the first half of 20th century, particularly in the 1930s and 1940s. The study included farmers’ production and consumption, income and trade, population and land, and the saving rate of reproduction, which reflected the productivity in the country and modern market’s trajectory on that time. The author also combined the case study of the eleven villages with themacroscopicinvestigation into northern China and even the whole country. Moreover, this work compared it with British peasants and countrysides before industrial revolution in a corresponding dimension. It provided readers with thinking space as extensive and abundant as possible.
