ZHANG Naihe: Rethinking British Economic and Social History through the Lens of Global History
April 1, 2022

Abstract:

There has been considerable interest in the studies of British economic and social history since the late nineteenth century. As an important component of the discipline of economic and social history, British economic and social history has always focused on issues such as the Industrial Revolution and placed the related economic and social transformation on top of its agenda. Moving into the new stage of economic and social globalization, the new discipline of global history emerged in the second half of the twentieth century, which also focuses on the social and economic transformation in Britain since the Industrial Revolution. We will acquire new insight on the studies of British economic and social history from the viewpoint of global history. For example, scholars have shifted the view of the Industrial Revolution from the English Miracle to the European Miracle, and then to the World Miracle, which clearly indicates the influence of global history. It in turn will lead to changes in British economic and social historical studies.
