YUAN Zhihui: Labayu the Expander Defending Himself Against Accusation:Translation of EA 252-254 with Commentary

Abstract:

The Amarna letters are diplomatic correspondences between Egypt and the West Asian States,which represents inter-states relationship between the West Asia and the North Africa at that time.In the Amarna era,Labayu,the rulers of Shakmu,pursued a policy of foreign expansion,and the rulers of the invaded vassals and Egyptian officials in Palestine accused Labayu of aggression in the letters dispatched to the pharaoh of Egypt.Labayu wrote three letters(EA 252-254)to the Egyptian Pharaoh to explain these matters.In these letters,Labayu defended his alliance with Mirkaru,ruler of Gazru,and his son's secretly communicating with Apiru,claimed that he was a faithful vassal of Egypt,and all accusations against Labayu were framed by ulterior motives.The three letters are of great historical value for study the relations between Egypt and its vassals in Palestine.
