GENG Zhi: Participation and contribution of British scientists to the Manhattan Project
February 27, 2025

Abstract:

According to the Quebec Agreement of 1943, Tube Alloys, the project of development of an atomic bomb of the UK government, was integrated into the Manhattan Project, the US government’s enterprise of manufacturing an atomic bomb in the Second World War. Some British scientist groups participated in the research and development of their American counterparts, mainly in the fields of production of uranium-235 using gas diffusion and electromagnetic separation methods, as well as the design and testing of atomic bomb. So, these scientists’ efforts contributed to the success of the Manhattan Project in time before the end of the War and laid a foundation for UK herself later becoming a member of the Nuclear Club. Yet the above nuclear cooperation between the UK and US was not no-holds-barred, since the participation of British scientists and the exchange of nuclear technology information were restricted by the American. Obviously, the US government had a motive for nuclear monopoly from the beginning of the cooperation.
