CHEN Lijun:The Rise and Development of Market Garden in Early Modern England and its Impact on Agricultural Industrial Structure
May 14, 2025

Abstract:The rise of market garden is the important foundation for England to get rid of traditional agriculture and to realize the link between agriculture and the market economy in the early modern period. Its rise and development is the result of many factors such as the consumer revolution and new market demand. Compared with traditional agriculture, market garden not only creates amazing economic benefits, but also brings wealth to the growers, thus generating an incremental payoff effect. Through continuous self-reinforcement, by the end of the 19th century, the scale and professionalization of the industry was eventually realized and had a significant impact on the structure of the agricultural industry in early modern England. By exploring the history of this industry, we can not only examine the methods and paths of the restructuring of the agricultural industry in early modern England, but also further explore the diversity of agricultural transformation.

Key words:early modern England ; market garden ; traditional agriculture ; agricultural industrial structure
