Abstract:The reign of the Chengzu Emperor of Ming Dynasty and the Taizong King ofthe Chosun Dynasty was an important stage in the construction of typical suzerain vassal relationship between China and Korea. They began close contact and tacit solidarity as early as before each became emperor or king. After being in power, they got along well andserved as mutual support, becoming "model” monarch and minister. On this basis, the two countries are friendly, trusting and mutually beneficial. Theymade concessions on issues related to frontier ethnic jurisdiction and disputed islands, and cooperated in dealing with the Japanese invasion problem that plagued the security of both countries, thusthe suzerain vassal relationship between China and Koreawas further consolidated and developed. In fact, under the appearance of "amity" between the two rulers, they had their own interests.Chengzu's kindness to the Chosun Dynasty was intended to gain Chosun's support for the suzerain vassal system and to maintain the dominance of the Ming Dynasty in the East Asian order. Taizong king, on the other hand, wanted to secure the new dynasty's international status and stabilize the surrounding environment by virtue of his deep affection forChengzu. The research on this issue is helpful to reveal thereal state of the transmutation ofChina and Korean relations in the early Ming Dynasty, as well as to show the complexity and variability of suzerain vassal relations.
