Research Interests

My major research area, and longest-established research interest, is the British economic and social history. In recent years, my research has focused largely on economic changes in 18th and 19th centuries. There are two areas I have special interests. Firstly, I intend to research the development of banking and the changes of institution about the industry in the industrial revolution. I hope I can probe the causes why the enormous growth of country banking happened in late 18th century and the process of the growth. Secondly, The conditions of banking in economic or financial crises in the period were another area I plan to exploit. All of banks except the Bank of England are private banks, which were found by no more than 6 partners, before 1826. Many private banks were affected adversely in the financial crises. These painful experiences should be a reason to establish the system of joint-stock banking company.
