Winners of BAHS Thirsk Prize 2025 Announced
September 10, 2025

The joint winners of the British Agricultural History Society Thirsk Prize 2025 have been announced and are:

Charmian Mansell, for Female Servants in Early Modern England (Oxford University Press, 2024) which impressed the judges for its innovative methodological approach, combining a large-scale database drawing on a wealth of primary sources with detailed pen-portraits of individual servants to reconstruct their lived experiences.

and

John Bulaitis, for The Tithe War in England and Wales, 1881-1936 (Boydell and Brewer, 2024) which the judges said represents a masterclass in using a specific episode as an entry point to a far wider topic, filling a long-standing gap in the history of tithes. It represents the distillation of exhaustive archival work to provide an engaging narrative.
