This paper will consider the Senior Department of the Royal Military College, High Wycombe, which was founded in May 1799, and its impact on Wellington's Army during the Peninsular War (1808-1814). Officers educated at High Wycombe, known as 'Wycombites' and 'Scientifics' were subsequently employed in the Quartermaster General's Department of the army. This recently developed department was the 'operations' branch of the staff system and was responsible for the movement of troops on the march as well as on the battlefield. This paper will explore the education received by officers at High Wycombe, the true purpose of the Staff College and the impact it had on Wellington's Army.
